Carpet Basics

What styles of carpet are there?

Carpet comes in four distinct styles: Berber/loop, plush, frieze and patterned, each offering unique characteristics:

  • Berber/Loop: Berber carpets are known for their looped construction, creating a textured and nubby surface. This style is durable and resistant to wear and tear, making it suitable for high-traffic areas.
  • Plush: Plush carpets have a smooth, even surface with a soft and velvety texture. This style provides a luxurious feel underfoot, making it a popular choice for formal settings and areas where comfort is a priority.
  • Frieze: Frieze carpets have a twisted and informal appearance, with long fibers that curl in different directions. The twisted fibers create a textured and casual look, and frieze carpets are known for their durability, making them suitable for high-traffic areas.
  • Patterned: Patterned carpets feature designs created by variations in color or pile height. The texture can vary depending on the design, incorporating both loop and cut pile elements. Patterned carpets add visual interest and can be used to make a decorative statement in specific areas.

What carpet fiber is the best for me?

When selecting carpet, it's crucial to consider factors such as durability, stain resistance, maintenance requirements, and how well the characteristics align with your lifestyle. For instance, if you prioritize stain resistance and durability, nylon may be a suitable choice, while those seeking an environmentally conscious option might lean towards wool. At Aladdin Carpet and Floors, our designers are ready to assist you in finding the perfect carpet that aligns with your style and meets your needs. Carpet is made from various types of fibers, including:

  • Nylon fiber: Nylon, the most popular type, is stain resistant and does well with dirt cover-up. Easy to maintain and durable causing it to be ideal for a home with kids and pets.
  • Polyester fiber: Polyester is a hypoallergenic fiber, is also stain/fade resistant and can be derived from recyclable materials. Polyester is considered a 'green' option due to its recyclable materials, which also help strengthen the fiber for longer durability. Installing polyester carpet is a typical practice in rental units.
  • Olefin: Tends to have limited color selection and may be less resilient (crushed) but it does protect against sunlight, bleach and stains. Olefin is usually used in commercial carpet installations.
  • Wool: Wool offers a high-end experience, being hypoallergenic, environmentally friendly with air purification properties, and anti-dust mite characteristics. It's an excellent choice for those seeking a luxurious and environmentally conscious option.

What is carpet padding?

As a shock absorber, a good padding will retain the look of the carpet for many years. Rebond, foam, urethane, rubber and jute are all different types of padding. Generally, the higher the weight and the more dense the padding is, the better the end-user experience. Aladdin Carpet & Floors offers 4 different carpet padding options: UltraLife Premium Rubber padding, Shaw Victorious padding, 7/16 Joy 8lb padding, and 7/16 Polo 6lb padding. Our best seller is UltraLife padding, proving to be the best with outstanding performance and exceptional warranties!

Am I responsible for the carpet seam placements?

No. Your estimator and ultimately your installer will decide for seam placement to minimize traffic exposure and light to reduce seam visibility. If you wish to know how the seams are placed It is your responsibility to review all the seam placements with the installer prior to installation.

In which styles of carpet seams are more visible?

In Berbers, loop profiles, flat weaves, and patterned loops carpets, seams will be more visible.

Can carpet seams be invisible?

Seams tend to be visible; however, we do everything possible to ensure they are less visible, depending on the room size, lighting, pattern, and carpet finish. In general, seams in textured and multicolored carpets are less visible.

Are pattern matches guaranteed on doorways?

No, pattern matches cannot be guaranteed on doorways.

Do all pattern carpets have pattern matches?

Yes, all pattern carpets have pattern matches. When figuring seams, the appropriate match will be added everywhere there is a seam.

Does having pattern matches add to the cost of my project?

Yes, it can add a substantial amount of carpet to your job.

Is it possible to have a full pattern carpet?

Carpets with small prints, diamonds, and square patterns will not appear complete when the floor reaches an edge.

I have a small diamond carpet and I see the pattern is slightly shifted? Is that normal?

Generally, walls in houses are not perfectly straight. The smaller the pattern of the carpet, the more the shift of the pattern is visible.

How am I supposed to take care of woven/flat weave carpets?

These carpets require special care. Some cannot be vacuumed using a beater bar vacuum. In these carpets seams are very noticeable. Some cannot have cross seams or be seamed at all.

Is it normal to see gaps between the carpet and the steps?

It depends on the way the carpet was installed. Generally, Carpet runners can be installed in two different ways:

  • Waterfall: The carpet will extend over the step nose and "fall" at an angle to the next tread. There will be a visible gap from the side with this type of installation.
  • Capped / Hollywood / Bullnose / Upholstery: The carpet will extend over the step nose and be tacked under the nose.
Will pattern carpet/runners line up the same on each step?

Depends on the pattern and type of installation. If you wish to line up the pattern, extra carpet needs to be ordered to specifically do so.

Are berber and loop carpets susceptible to runs?

Yes, berber and loop carpets are susceptible to runs. This can be caused by wheels on chairs, vacuum cleaner nozzles, etc. There is also different equipment with rough edges that tend to catch the carpet “loop” and create runs.

I just bought a new carpet and I see furniture marks. How can I prevent that?

Heavy objects such as furniture can and will leave permanent dents in your carpet. Frequent vacuuming and moving furniture around will reduce the crushing effect.

Can carpet roll marks/ indents go away on their own?

Allow up to 60 days for the roll marks/ dents to relax. Carpet is usually shipped from the manufacturer tightly rolled and will begin to take its intended shape once unpackaged. Additional vacuuming during the first week will speed up this process.

Why is the carpet I chose look/ feel different after installed in my home?

Due to dye-lots, lighting, paint color, and furniture layout the appearance of the carpet will be different. Please remember the carpet sample you are looking at is only a representative of what you will be getting, not an exact match.

Is it normal to see shedding of loose fibers?

Shedding of loose fibers is common on pile type carpet. It is also expected around the perimeter on all carpet types.

My new carpet is shedding. How can I resolve that?

Vacuuming will help resolve the shedding and you might see some fibers in your vacuum for the first months. Keep in mind that shedding is not a manufacturing defect.

Can I use carpet in areas subject to moisture?

It is not recommended to use carpet around moisture areas such as toilets, showers, etc. This may void the Customer’s warranty and cause mold.

What if my wall and baseboard get some scuff marks during the carpet installation?

If we are installing carpet in an area that has difficult access or attempting to bring carpet into a basement or attic there could be some marks and scuffs on your walls, baseboards, and railings. Carpet installation entails cutting and tucking against the baseboard where damages during the procedure cannot be prevented. We will do everything possible to avoid marking your baseboards and walls.

Am I responsible for touching up and repainting scuff marks?

It is the Customer’s responsibility for touching up, repainting or reimbursing for light marks and scuffs due to access issues.

Why is the height of my new baseboards different from the previous ones?

The height of your new carpet may not be the same height as your previous floor covering. Therefore; the height of the baseboards may need to be adjusted, and is the responsibility of the Customer.
